Program Notes
Creating music by sewing together different sounds is similar to making clothes. Chords layered with unfamiliar tones weave a rough-textured fabric, rhythms intertwined in diverse ways form a unique pattern, and distinctive melodies stitch together memorable embellishments.
The viola and guitar bring out the unique characteristics of string instruments through vibrato, harmonics, and glissando. By borrowing traditional melodies once sung while sewing in the Gyeongnam region of South Korea, the piece captures the organic irregularity of orally transmitted folk rhythms and melodies.
